We were initial signatories of the Climate Leaders Coalition and we are one of a small number of business who have signed up to the Climate Leaders Coalition more ambitious 2019 pledge of having our carbon footprint externally verified, adopting GHG reduction targets grounded in science, assessing our climate change risks and proactively supporting both our team members and our suppliers to reduce their emissions.
We are founding members of the SBC who helped develop our initial sustainability strategy in 2018 and we are working with other sustainable companies with the SBN in helping provide sustainable ideas and policy to the wider business community and to central Government.
We are the first waste company in New Zealand to complete an externally audited carbon footprint report and carbon footprint reduction plan. As members of Toitū we are 100% invested in progressing towards a low carbon future.
Waste Management NZ Ltd actively participates in advocacy initiatives undertaken by WasteMINZ and is represented on a number of key industry consultative groups.
We are passionate advocates for better, greener buildings and we are working in partnership with the NZGBC to support sustainable building practises.
We are working with Site Safe to provide education and resources on best practice systems and behaviours known to improve on-site health & safety. Site Safe help develop future Health & Safety leaders, give advice to our business on solutions that make a real difference and ensure that everyone goes home safe at the end of each day.
The health and safety of our team members is paramount to us and working with NZISM helps ensure our health and safety practitioners have the latest skills and knowledge to do their jobs.
Waste Management is a proud investor of the Sustainable Business Network. We are actively involved in a number of programmes including supporting our team members to attend the Leadership in Sustainable Business course and our graduates getting involved in the Now Crowd. We are actively involved in discussions on the focus areas of waste, as well as the Million Metres Streams initiative.
Through our partnership with All Heart NZ, a charitable trust, we can redirect and repurpose unwanted and redundant corporate items and ensure they receive a second life. All Heart have a redirect and repurpose service for waste material that still has value including office furniture such as desks and chairs, to IT equipment and corporate clothing.
We teamed up with the not-for profit organisation Keep New Zealand Beautiful to create and distribute an educational storybook to every kindergarten, primary and intermediate school throughout our country. Kiki Kiwi & Friends: The Travelling Trash is an educational story which follows Kiki Kiwi and his friends as they aim to ‘Do The Right Thing’ to keep their community clean and prevent litter from entering waterways.
