A day in the life of your role:

No day is ever the same. I work with various project teams, visit sites, meet with many people, work on business models,
reports and gather data.

What do you enjoy most about Waste Management’s graduate programme?

The exposure we get throughout the business – there are many opportunities to get involved in different business areas.
Everyone is supportive so it’s a great environment to develop both business and personal skills.

Key features of the graduate programme:

  • Variety of work
  • Travel – I have travelled to a number of regions within the Lower North Island.
  • Training and development – we directly work with highly skilled staff and managers so we are always learning from the best.
Staff provide on site training and we have been exposed to courses to expand our knowledge e.g. a landfill operations course.

Extraordinary, inspiring and exciting.

Three words to describe the culture at Waste Management?

Positive, supportive and dedicated.

A day in the life of your role:

Most days are different. Some days I test and learn about trucks, other days I write up standard operating procedures.

What do you enjoy most about Waste Management’s graduate programme?

Being involved in learning about the whole business and not just one department.

Key features of the graduate programme:

  • Travel – Visited the Netherlands and China to look at electric and refuse trucks.
  • Training and development – Receive mentoring from a senior staff member and have been exposed to a landfill operations course.
The company is highly vertically integrated so there are many systems you get to learn and see.
  • Hands on approach – Frequently meet up with executive members of the company and have a mentor and buddy throughout the programme.

Three words to describe the graduate programme to date:

Involved, adventure and innovation.

Three words to describe the culture at Waste Management?

Professional, dynamic and relaxed (as in stress-free not lazy).

We work with a diverse range of customers, from residential homes and small businesses, through to large multinational commercial and industrial clients that span almost every industry in New Zealand. We’re proud to offer a comprehensive range of services that can be tailored to meet the needs of our customers.

Our focus is on the future, the possibilities it holds, and ultimately the protection of it.

Our people are resourceful and pragmatic, and take personal responsibility for the excellent service we deliver to our customers.  As a team, we’re committed to getting it right the first time and we provide the tools to help our people do just that.

The way we operate is a source of pride and passion for our people, and that attitude helps us meet the challenge of managing New Zealand’s waste every day.

Our values aren’t just high-brow statements on a wall.  They guide how we behave as individuals on a day-to-day basis.  They’re the sum of our shared experiences and ambition as a company, and we live by them. After all, it’s the shared vision of the entire Waste Management team that defines the company.
