Dispatch Coordinator, Upper North Island

Derryn started in our Customer Call Centre and is now working with our busy dispatch team.

What was your first role with Waste Management?

I first applied to Waste Management as a friend recommended the job. I had been working in customer service and this role sounded like I could use my past relevant experience but also gain some new skills. I was also interested in working for a bigger company with more opportunities rather than the small businesses that I had worked for previously.

What was your position title when you joined Waste Management?

My job title when I started was Customer Service Representative.

How have you found the training and support at Waste Management?

When I started, I received three weeks of comprehensive training, which involved a combination of theory and practical computer work as part of a ‘buddy system’, so you could learn on the job in real time. Support continued with the trainer available for questions and my original ‘buddy’, who was placed next to me.

What excites you most about being part of the Waste Management team?

The most exciting part of working at Waste Management is that there are lots of people across many departments to meet, interact and work with. There is a social club and other external activities, such as participating in Round the Bays, dinners out with co-workers, and Christmas functions that have included going to the Zoo and the Museum of Transport and Technology.

What is one inspiring thing that you have learnt about Waste Management that you didn’t know before you started?

Waste Management is a company focused on the environment and the future and I find that inspiring. From electric trucks, to more sustainable management of waste. It’s always progressing forward.

What is the best part of your current role?

The best part of my current role is that every day is different and you interact with multiple teams across the business - from the drivers to the account managers. Everyone has a part to play!

How long were you in Customer Services before the opportunity to progress came along?
Once induction training was completed and I felt comfortable with my role, I had the opportunity to be cross-trained into the Commercial Customer Services team. I was able to use this experience when the opportunity to join the Commercial Dispatch team came along.

What would you say to a potential new Waste Management Customer Call Centre team member?

A position in the Call Centre will ensure that you will be supported with a great team around you. You will succeed if you have fast typing skills and a knowledge of computer systems. It can be daunting learning a new system, but with the training and support - it will all fall into place. There will always be opportunities from the Call Centre to go into a different role, if it interests you.
