Update: essential services

As of 11.59pm Wednesday 25 March, New Zealand will be at COVID-19 Alert Level 4: Eliminate, with the government mandating all businesses close for four weeks, except those considered essential services. 
Waste collection is an essential service. However, there will be some changes to the way we operate in order to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the number of team members collecting or processing different waste and recycling streams.

Waste collection services
The following advice applies to our collections of these waste streams nationally, except if you live in Kerikeri click here.

Please continue to present your bins as you have done in the past. However, understand that your service could be delayed. If your bin is not collected on your scheduled day, please continue to keep it accessible or on the kerbside. If you have an on-property collection, see note below.

If you are putting your wheelie bin out, make sure you put it somewhere that is easy for our drivers to access. Remember to maintain a minimum of two metres distance between you and our team.

General waste

  • For your home: We will continue to collect your household waste as normal. If you have an on-property collection, you will need to place it kerbside on your collection day during the Alert Level 4 period.
  • For your business: General waste from any business that is an essential service will be collected as normal, unless you advise us otherwise. 

Recycling

  • For your home: We will continue to collect your household mixed recycling, however this may go to landfill while we remain in Alert Level 4. If you have an on-property collection, you will need to place it kerbside on your collection day during the Alert Level 4 period.
  • For your business: 
    • Recycling from any business that is an essential service will also be collected as normal, unless you advise us otherwise, however this may go to landfill while we remain in Alert Level 4. 
    • Cardboard collections for businesses where we collect this material separately will be collected as normal and are striving to bale this material so it can be recycled. 

Garden, foodwaste and organic waste

  • For your home: We will continue to collect your household garden waste, however this may go to landfill while we remain in Alert Level 4. If you have an on-property collection, you will need to place it kerbside on your collection day during the Alert Level 4 period.
  • For your business: Greenwaste, foodwaste or organic collections from any business that is an essential service will be collected as normal, unless you advise us otherwise, however this may go to landfill while we remain in Alert LEVEL 4.

FlexiBin® 

We will no longer process FlexiBin removal bookings online. FlexiBin removals will only be provided if:

 The waste is potentially a health hazard, or is not safe to keep on your property for the duration of Alert Level 4 and the amount of waste can’t be put in your normal wheelie bin collection.

If we do remove a FlexiBin, we will only do so if: 

  • we can collect the bin without breaching the 2m physical distancing rule
  • any household waste is placed into bags before it is put in FlexiBin.

Skips 

We will no longer process Skip orders online and will only provide them if:

The waste is potentially a health hazard, or is not safe to leave uncollected for the duration of Alert Level 4.

If we do take a skip booking, we will only do so if: 

  • we believe that we are doing so as part of providing an essential service
  • we can deliver and collect the bin without breaching the 2m physical distancing rule
  • any household waste is placed into bags before it is put in the skip
  • the bin is not overloaded –we must be able to put a cover over the bin to be able to transport the waste for disposal.

Hazardous and medical waste
For your business: Hazardous waste from any business that is an essential service will be collected as normal, unless you advise us otherwise. 

Oil recovery 
For your business: Oil recovery and delivery for any business that is an essential service will be collected and delivered as normal, unless you advise us otherwise. 

Partswasher
For your business: Servicing Partswasher machines can be arranged for any business that is an essential service. 

 

Access to our sites and facilities for the general public
The following advice applies to our operations nationally.
All sites, from landfills to transfer stations to our branches will be closed to visitors or the public.

Landfills and refuse transfer stations

  • Closed to the general public
  • Open to commercial customers who are deemed an essential service

Living Earth and composting facilities

  • Living Earth Auckland: Closed 
  • Living Earth, Tirohia: Closed 
  • Living Earth Christchurch: Operating
  • Timaru composting facility: Closed
