From 31 December 2020, Waste Management prepaid stickers will no longer be accepted at the Midtown Refuse Transfer Station. Bags will continue to be accepted at the transfer station but all bags will be charged at the price displayed.
The Midtown Refuse Transfer Station is a cash free site, Eftpos and credit card transactions only.
This follows a review which found the service is:
• Not environmentally friendly as it uses single use plastic bags which end up in landfill
• Detrimental to the Whanganui environment as the bags are prone to splitting, spilling waste on the streets
• Dangerous for the Waste Management team as the service requires a runner, heavy lifting and exposure to hidden sharp objects
• Very inefficient as our team needs to go down every street, every week looking for bags.
To replace plastic bag collections, we are pleased to offer Whanganui customers our newly launched PayAsUGO wheelie bin service. This service lets customers choose how often they want their waste collected, with no fixed contract or minimum monthly spend. With PayAsUGO you only pay when your bin is emptied.
Alternatively, you can choose WMGO, a lower priced wheelie bin service, that is ideal for households with regular waste.
Service availability varies across the Whanganui region.
