Case Study: Wyndham hotel sustainable solutions for on-site waste & recycling

The Wyndham Garden Christchurch is a newly opened 96-bedroom hotel with four floors of penthouse apartments. It’s a development with significant waste needs, and our team has worked proactively with the Wyndham Garden team, including its architect and builder, to come up with appropriate and sustainable solutions.

Established in 1984, Clearwater Construction is one of New Zealand’s top design and build construction companies. With offices in Auckland and Christchurch, Clearwater Construction specialises in apartments, commercial, industrial and car park projects throughout New Zealand.

Waste Management has been providing waste, recycling and hazardous waste solutions nationally to Clearwater Construction for over 10 years. Our engagement has been as a trusted sustainability advisor to provide the best waste and recycling solutions to Clearwater Construction including:

  • Regular site visits to conduct waste audits and attend meetings with staff to discuss waste and recycling
  • Identifying areas of improvement and providing the appropriate services and signage to increase recycling efforts
  • Sharing our latest innovations for recycling construction materials and providing accurate reporting on all waste and recycling weights and volumes

Challenges

A significant challenge was the limited amount of outdoor space to house appropriate bins. Once the hotel was operating there was only room to supply smaller wheelie bins that would be stored in the basement and wheeled out to be serviced. This was going to be inefficient and time-consuming for the Wyndham Garden Christchurch team.

Action

We met with the architect and the builder from Clearwater Construction (the developers) to recommend allowing for space outside of the building for larger frontload bins, as it would provide a better outcome for the hotel and apartments regarding cost, servicing and potential odour and pest control.

Result

Together with Clearwater Construction we took advantage of a difficult to access parking space and allocated it as an outdoor waste bin area.

Since the hotel opened, we have also been conducting regular site audits and engaging with hotel staff to educate and discuss waste and recycling. We have identified key areas of improvement and offered appropriate solutions and installed signage to increase recycling efforts.

Client Endorsement
