David Howie elected to the board of WasteMINZ

Finding solutions to the challenges facing the waste industry, and New Zealand as a whole, is a driver for David Howie, as he takes up a position on the WasteMINZ Board.

David, who is Waste Management’s General Manager for the Lower North Island, was elected on to the Board at the WasteMINZ AGM last month. With over 1,400 members, WasteMINZ represents the waste, resource recovery and contaminated land sectors in New Zealand.

One of the most pressing issues the world faces is climate change, and David is keen to share his considerable experience and knowledge on the part the waste industry needs to play.

David is also the company’s expert on recycling and resource recovery. Prior to this he had a 25-year career in construction materials supply.

“Over this time I have increasingly become concerned about the impact we collectively have on the environment. We need to accept that action from all of us is required if we are to meet the targets that New Zealand and the world has set.”

David is looking forward to strengthening the industry perspective at the WasteMINZ Board level and helping with the transition to a circular economy – an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of non-renewable resources.

David also brings his strong experience liaising with local and central government to the role. Most recently, he was part of the waste industry advisory group that regularly met with government officials during the COVID-19 lockdowns to advise on best practice for continuing with the essential service of waste collection during Levels 3 & 4.
