E-trikes, guardians of the lake front and better recycling in Wānaka

“Guardians of the lake front” have been cruising the Wānaka CBD over the summer months on Waste Management (WM) designed e-trikes, promoting better recycling and litter prevention.

Our e-trikes are regularly seen out and about on the streets of Wānaka, but in a new initiative two e-trike riders were brought on board specifically to engage with visitors and the community about what they did with their waste.

The e-trikes often spark interest from members of the public, which tends to lead to conversations about recycling and waste reduction.

Seeing an opportunity to make a difference, the Queenstown Lakes District Council funded the “guardians of the lake front” to be vocal advocates for the Council’s drive towards reducing litter and improving recycling.

And it seems to have worked, with the guardians reporting 100% positive engagement from members of the community and more than 250 “great conversations” over the summer months.

Over summer an estimated 30 wheelie bins of additional recycling were recovered by the guardians, who accepted recyclable material from people in the CBD and checked recycling bins for contamination. They also kept litter levels low by emptying 38 bins each day.

It’s great to see the e-trikes, first customised by Senior Project Engineer – Electric Vehicle Sam Donaldson, put to such great use!
