Helping to build Aotearoa’s circular economy

Helping to build Aotearoa’s circular economy

In 2020 Waste Management was able to cut operational carbon emissions and create enough renewable energy to power 24,000 homes.

In addition, last year Waste Management teams across New Zealand collected 86, 529 tonnes of recycling, converted 124,266 tonnes of food and garden waste into compost, and recycled 4,400 tonnes of tyres for alternative fuel.

These and other facts about our contribution to New Zealand’s Circular Economy in 2020 are now available below:

Key sustainability facts from 2020 include:

  • Waste Management captured 95% of landfill gas and converted it into renewable energy – enough to power the equivalent of 24,000 homes
  • We captured 100% of the leachate at our landfills
  • We collected 63,248 tonnes of hazardous waste and treated it
  • We lowered our tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) operational emissions by 7% (from our baseline year of 2017) to 57,788 tCO2e

Waste Management will continue to look for ways to innovate and sustainably take care of Aotearoa’s waste.
