This week, Waste Management was sentenced in relation to a tragic and regrettable incident at Kerepehi in 2017 that seriously injured a contractor when his arm became trapped in a conveyor belt at the tyre shredding facility.
Waste Management has been in discussions with the contractor who was injured to support him following this injury.
Immediately after the incident we inspected the 14 Waste Management sites with conveyor belts and confirmed they had appropriate guarding and safety systems conforming with all relevant standards.
Waste Management is confident that the situation at Kerepehi, where guards were not replaced following maintenance, was an isolated occurrence.
The site has since been closed and we have opened a modern tyre recycling facility in Wiri, managed by a Waste Management supervisor and staffed with permanent team members.
An external training provider, UpSkills, has also delivered a customised Skills First programme to train and build confidence in our wider team. More than 350 team members have participated to date. Safety training has always been a requirement at our facilities and this event has highlighted just how important this.
Finally, we note that our Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) system was commended by Worksafe in the hearing and was found to meet all requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and all relevant standards applicable to the operations.
