Leaders in sustainability innovation

Leaders in sustainability innovation

Last night we were thrilled to be announced the winner of Excellence in Innovation at the Westpac Auckland Business Awards Best of the Best for 2020.

Over 700 businesses entered the awards, and Waste Management was chosen as the leader in innovation for our work around sustainability.

Our entry focused on what we are doing to protect the environment and reduce climate change, examples of how we do this is include:

  • Operating world-leading landfills that capture over 95% of landfill gas and either convert it to electricity to supply homes and businesses across New Zealand or destroy it to stop it entering the atmosphere
  • Electrifying our waste collection fleet by converting diesel trucks at our purpose-built facility. This programme will ultimately save around 100,000 litres of diesel every day
  • Operating New Zealand’s largest tyre recycling facility in Wiri, Auckland, which can shred around three million end-of-life tyres for conversion into fuel
  • Reducing the time collection trucks are on the road by giving our customers the option to pause their waste collection service through our PayAsUGO service.

We are also the first waste company in New Zealand to commit to a sustainability strategy For Future Generations and carbon emissions reduction plan.

Managing Director Evan Maehl says he is hugely proud of the work Waste Management is doing to be a sustainability leader.

“To be chosen from among 700 Auckland businesses is great recognition of the incredible effort our team makes every day to take care of New Zealanders’ waste through innovation and world-leading technology.

“Our team of 1700 is truly passionate about safeguarding Aotearoa for future generations.”
