Luani Bernardi, Chemist at Technical Services

We talk to some incredible women who make up the Waste Management whānau. In the past the waste industry was largely dominated by men, and it's wonderful to see increasing numbers of women working in every sector across our business.

 

 

What is your job in a nut shell?

My job is to apply my technical and analytical skills, ensuring the waste received at Waste Management Technical Services is transported, stored, treated and disposed of safely. This involves sampling and testing hazardous wastes, running treatability trials and chemical and physical analysis. I also provide technical advice to the sales team about chemicals handling, treatment and disposal methods to help them quoting for new jobs. Another important part of my work is to ensure that the treated waste complies with trade waste bylaw and landfill acceptance criteria.

What is the biggest challenge in your role?

I deal with a huge variety of hazardous residues, from different chemical classes, produced by laboratories, hospitals, industrial and agrichemical activities. The biggest challenge is to know the properties of these chemicals to be able to advise the safest and most sustainable treatment method.

What is the biggest reward in your role?

To know that my job is helping to protect the environment and contributing to Waste Management's sustainability strategy For Future Generations.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I like to spend time outdoors exploring New Zealand’s beautiful natural environment. With over 15,000km of coastline, mountains and forests there is always something to do outside, no matter the season of the year. When I am not enjoying New Zealand’s outdoors, I am enthusiastic about cooking and baking.
