Recycling Auckland’s construction and demolition waste

Recycling Auckland’s construction and demolition waste

Auckland’s building boom means construction and demolition waste is the city’s largest single waste stream. In fact, it makes up around 40% of total weight going to landfill.

Waste Management is helping Aucklanders by providing a building and construction waste recycling solution. Our Building and Construction Resource Recovery Centre has been purpose-built to capture as much material as possible for reuse, through a combination of mechanical sorting and sort-line activities.

We can recycle over a massive 70% of the materials we receive, which are then transformed into a range of products including garden mulch, aggregates, fertiliser and compost – to name a few.

To make it easier for our building and construction customers who do not have the time or space on-site to separate out materials, we can provide mixed recycling bins which are sorted by our hardworking team at the Resource Recovery Centre.

Material we can recover and divert to other uses incudes:

  • Timber
  • Metals
  • Plasterboard
  • Concrete, bricks, asphalt and clean soils
  • Cardboard
  • Polystyrene
  • Greenwaste

We also offer detailed reporting for each load delivered to the centre, including a breakdown of the materials recovered. These reports meet Green Star and Homestar construction and demolition waste reporting criteria.

To encourage recycling and waste minimisation, the government is increasing and expanding the waste disposal levy from 1 July – which means sending waste to landfill will soon be more expensive. If you work in the building and construction industry and would like to learn more about how we can help you sustainably recycle more of your waste, contact Pieter Goosen on 021 532 817.
