After almost 13 years at Waste Management, Managing Director Tom Nickels has announced he will retire at the end of the year.
During his tenure, Tom has led the company through interesting and turbulent times. From the 2008-09 Global Financial Crisis to the Christchurch earthquakes and, most recently, the exceptional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Waste Management underwent an ownership change during his period at the helm, transitioning from Transpacific Industries Group to Beijing Capital Group in 2014, at which point the company reclaimed its Waste Management New Zealand identity.
Following this, Tom led the drive to electrify the company’s large fleet of trucks as well as their light vehicle fleet, and in recognition that sustainability is core to Waste Management’s purpose, launched Waste Management’s sustainability strategy For Future Generations – a first for the environmental services sector across Australasia.
Waste Management’s Chairman, Mr Cao, thanked Tom for his leadership over the years, for building a world class environmental services organisation and a great team of talented, committed people at Waste Management.
Tom will step down on 31 December this year.
The Chairman was also pleased to announce the appointment of Waste Management’s current Chief Financial Officer, Evan Maehl as the new Managing Director.
Evan’s eight years as Chief Financial Officer at Waste Management has given him deep knowledge of all aspects of the company. In addition, he has also led the finance, legal and IT functions through a period of major change.
Evan will commence as Managing Director on 1 January 2021.
