Winners of the Supreme Business Excellence Award

Winners of the Supreme Business Excellence Award

Last night we were thrilled to be announced as the winners of the Supreme Business Excellence Award at the 2020 Westpac Auckland Business Awards South & East.

We also picked up the award for Excellence in Innovation at the gala dinner, where the best of business in Auckland’s South & East came together to celebrate and network.

It is the first time we have entered the awards, which drew over 700 entries this year. Our entry was focused around sustainability innovation, including For Future Generations, our carbon emissions reduction plan and EV programme.

Announcing Waste Management’s win in a media release, the judges say:

“Waste Management design and operate state-of-the-art waste management and recycling facilities nationwide. Many think of waste management as people that simply pick up and take away their refuse. Tonight’s winner is much more than that.  A large part of their business is focused on recycling, and they are always looking for new and better solutions that are going to best meet the needs of New Zealand, both now and in the future.

“Their business also includes waste to energy initiatives; solid waste management; liquid and hazardous waste collection, treatment and disposal. They are the first waste company in New Zealand to measure greenhouse gas emissions and create a carbon footprint reduction plan, which includes capturing and converting 95% of landfill gas to electricity - it’s not surprise they walked away with the Excellence in Innovation category. With 1,700 team members across 70 locations nationwide, Waste Management are positively making their mark across New Zealand…

“…Waste Management are a standout winner and deserve the supreme award tonight. In taking out the Innovation Award they signalled that they are a company focussed on making a difference and they are.”

Managing Director Tom Nickels says it’s wonderful to have the company’s drive towards sustainability recognised alongside outstanding competition from other innovative Kiwi businesses.

“We are very pleased to be recognised for the work we are doing to manage New Zealand’s waste safely and sustainably. I am exceptionally proud of our team of 1700 who consider it our collective responsibility to safeguard New Zealand’s beautiful environment.

“Many thanks to Auckland Unlimited (formerly ATEED and sponsors of the Excellence in Innovation award), Westpac and the Auckland Business Chamber for this honour. ”
