We are a people-focused business; we care about our people.
We have a great team who offer invaluable experience, skill and knowledge. Waste Management people are resourceful and pragmatic, and take personal responsibility for the excellent service we deliver to our customers every day. We all understand the need to go the extra mile to deliver reliable, responsive and professional waste management.
We invest in training.
As a team we are committed to getting it right first time and we provide the tools to help our people do just that. We invest in specific training in many areas of the business, including dedicated driver training for our staff on the road, and a sophisticated Knowledge Centre resource for our customer service centre.
This is constantly updated with the latest information on our services and proceduresfor our front-line customer service personnel, and helps them provide confident, knowledgeable advice and solutions that meet and exceed our customers’ needs and expectations.
We are also fastidious about keeping our people and our communities, safe from the potential harm from waste. You’ll find more on this in our Safety section.
The way Waste Management operates is a source of pride and passion for our people, and that attitude helps us meet the challenge of managing New Zealand’s waste every day.
Trust Waste Management to care for our continued clean living.
We believe we all have the right to live the life we choose, in a clean, safe environment, our environment. We all want to enjoy the outdoors and live, work and play in our neighbourhoods, free of waste and pollutants.
Every day, Waste Management collects, processes, recycles and extracts valuable resources from New Zealand’s waste.
Through excellent management, we keep our communities cleaner and safer, making a positive impact on the lives of people and safeguarding our environment.
So New Zealanders can live in a safe, unspoiled environment, we recycle as much as we can, sending waste back to work, and if it can’t possibly be recycled, we can still extract benefit from it through our modern landfill technology. We like to think of it as being positively resourceful.
We use advanced, sustainable technology to capture 95% of the landfill gas generated from waste materials, using it to create electricity. We do this at our world-class Redvale energy park and landfill facility north of Auckland.
Trust Waste Management; we have the resources to take care of the waste we all generate in a safe and sustainable way, so everyone can continue to enjoy our unique environment.
Where we have come from.
We are the country's largest and only fully integrated national waste provider; we're trusted leaders in reliably providing a full range of collection, recycling, treatment and other modern sustainable waste management services. We work with customers all over New Zealand.
Despite this, many people may think of us as a business that simply picks up and takes away their refuse.
We are much more than that. A large part of our business is focused on recycling, and we are always looking for new and better solutions that are going to best meet the needs of New Zealand.
We are focussed on the future of waste management
We will remain both the leader and a trusted authority in providing for the country's recycling and waste management needs.
Waste Management New Zealand will continue to set the bar in the use of environmentally sustainable technology. We'll take a pre-eminent role in showcasing modern, sustainable waste management best practice and providing sustainable services to businesses and communities.
We will continue to invest heavily in future sustainable technology, and be recognised as a valued, responsible infrastructure partner that attracts and retains the best talent and people a company vital to the industry.
How we will get there.
To achieve this, we will continue to follow the "Waste Management way" which is to do the right thing by our customers and the environment.
What does this look like in action? It means when the going gets tough, we'll be there. During the tragic Christchurch earthquakes, we were the only infrastructural utility service to keep operating 24/7.
We will also continue to show leadership; building awareness of the importance of modern sustainable waste management and showing our true value as a service company that meets a vital infrastructural need, and not simply a logistics one.
We will also raise awareness of the value and need for investment in quality landfill services as well as delivering the infrastructure to continue to manage and/or recycle New Zealand's current and future waste, in a modern and sustainable way.
Safety is at the heart of everything we do.
The health and wellbeing of people is paramount; that goes for our customers, communities, and our Waste Management personnel. We have a Zero Harm policy, which aims for an injury and incident free workplace. We do all we can to make sure that when our people leave work at the end of the day, they’ve suffered no harm.
Everyone at Waste Management has a personal commitment to safety, so we never stop asking, ‘is it safe?’
SLAM to be safe.
How does that look in practice? We SLAM. Stop, Look, Assess, Manage. It’s the approach we take to every task and our staff are trained to SLAM and make the right safety decisions for the circumstances.
All staff must attend our Toolbox Talks each month. These assess and review best practice safety procedures and are a forum for improving our performance through shared experiences.
Outside of Toolbox Talks, every Waste Management branch throughout the country has a Safety Committee, which regularly reviews that branch’s own safety performance.
Not only that, every meeting involving 4 or more Waste Management staff includes a “safety minute’ at the front of every meeting, where one attendee provides a relevant safety tip or observation for the benefit of all.
This concentration on safety works; safety-related incidents have reduced by 90% in the last five years in our workplace. That’s world class.
Our focus on safety is a continual work in progress, backed by our senior management, and fully documented and rigorous company-wide management systems.
Waste Management has been certified to ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment), ASNZ 4801 (Health and Safety Systems), ACC Partnership Programme, Tertiary and ACC Fleet Management, Tertiary helping us to a superior safety, health and environmental record.
