Commercial success underpins our business. To achieve this, we’ve built Waste Management on three areas of focus: safety, sustainability and service. Each of these is central to everything we do. Indeed, sustainability is what we do.

We are thrilled to be moving towards electric cars and waste collection trucks as part of our commitment to sustainability. We currently run over 200 cars and 800 trucks across New Zealand, and are now trailing plug-in electric trucks to pilot transitioning our truck fleet to plug-in electric. This is an exciting step forward for the waste and environmental services industry, as it’s the first time a waste company in New Zealand has made a commitment to transition towards a plug-in electric collection fleet.
In addition, we will be transitioning our light vehicle fleet to electric plug-in as leases expire and we find suitable vehicles in the market to meet our needs. This commitment goes to the heart of what sustainability means, and sustainability is our core purpose. Keep your eye out for our electric trucks on New Zealand’s roads later this year.
BRRP is a state-of-the-art construction and demolition waste processing plant, established after the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake to recover valuable resource from the earthquake waste. The plant is a joint venture between Waste Management and five Canterbury Councils, designed and operated by Waste Management.
At BRRP, we’re sorting through an estimated ½ million tonnes of mixed demolition material from earthquake-damaged buildings and homes in the CBD and Eastern Suburbs. Material will continue to arrive until 2016 and we estimate the plant will be operational for five years. It runs 16 hours a day, 5 days a week. Our goal is to minimise residual landfill waste, and maximise the recovery of materials for recycling and reuse in the rebuilding process.
At BRRP the material is pre-sorted to remove heavy material, it’s then stockpiled and bulk coarse sorted in a way that ensures maximum waste recovery and the residual waste is introduced to ‘the Recovernator’, our high tech sorting plant.
Sorting is both manual and mechanical. Stockpiled material is shredded to reduce items to size we can process. We recover fine materials (mostly soil) and use magnets to recover ferrous metals, and eddy current separators to separate and recover non-ferrous metals.
Fibre and fittings, and gib or plasterboard are removed by hand. Timber is separated from hardfill in a scraper bath; the timber floats while the hardfill sinks.
Through this process we are able to recover up to 10 different products, recycling the maximum amount of material from this natural disaster and putting it back to work in the Canterbury community.
When you think of landfill, the modern day reality is a long way from the council ‘dumps’ of yesterday.
Waste Management’s world class Redvale Energy Park and Landfill is a $200 million investment in clean – tech sustainable waste management innovation.
At Redvale we recycle as much as we can and repurpose it, and material we can’t recycle is processed, contained and put to work producing electricity.
Using a network of hybrid gas wells, we capture more than 90% of the landfill gas emitted during organic decay and use it to power 12,000 homes; a figure that will increase to 30,000 by 2025. That makes us the largest renewable energy producer in Auckland.
Redvale sets the industry standard in the use of environmentally sustainable practices. We’ve won major environmental awards and attracted interest from engineers and practioners all over the world.
And the innovation continues. In 2015 we will introduce new compaction technology to Redvale from Gogh Caterpillar. The new breed of compactors are safer to use and offer environmental benefits, including improved compactive effort, fuel efficiency, and noise suppression.
