Update 19 May 2020

Auckland-Regional-Landfill-Latest-Update

It is now one week until the public notification period for the proposed Auckland Regional Landfill ends on Tuesday 26 May.

We want to thank everyone who has made a submission so far. At last count Council had received a total of 251 submissions, plus 17 on the Private Plan Change application.

This is a very pleasing number and shows good interest in the project.
If you haven’t already done so, you can still make a submission on the resource consent application here and/ or the Private Plan Change here.

What is the difference between the two processes?

The resource consent application includes an assessment of effects in relation to a specific proposal to build a new landfill in Wayby Valley, covering a range of areas including environmental, cultural, traffic, social and economic effects and how we are proposing to address these. If granted, the resource consent would give permission for a landfill to be constructed.

The Private Plan Change request is to have the land owned by WMNZ in Wayby Valley recognised in the Auckland Unitary Plan by creating a precinct over the land with specific rules for a landfill. If this change is made, it will mean the precinct will be clearly identified on the Auckland Unitary Plan maps for anyone to see and also that future generations are aware from the maps that the precinct contains a landfill. Nonetheless, if the Private Plan Change is approved it would still require a further resource consent process to actually establish a landfill.

Submissions for both proposals close on Tuesday 26 May 2020.

After the current public notification period closes on 26 May, Auckland Council must prepare a summary of submissions on the Private Plan Change and notify submitters and certain other parties who then have an opportunity to lodge further submissions in respect of matters raised in the first round of submissions. Council will also appoint commissioners to run the resource consent and Private Plan Change hearings. Waste Management’s desire is to hold both hearings together later this year to save time, cost and effort for all those participating in the process.

As well as accessing all the information online, you can also contact Auckland Council, by email at unitaryplan@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or by phone (09) 365 3786, to arrange a copy of the resource consent and/or Private Plan Change documentation to be provided electronically, or a hardcopy if you do not have access to a computer.

And, as always, we invite you to contact us at Waste Management on 0800 927 837 or arl@wastemanagement.co.nz with any questions or queries you may have about the proposal.

Thank you for your continued interest.
