A blessing ceremony was held at dawn this morning to mark the handover of Waste Management NZ Limited’s new, purpose-built Auckland headquarters at 318 East Tamaki Road.
A collaboration between Stride Property Limited and Waste Management, the site will be the base for 400 team members and marks the amalgamation of several Waste Management facilities across Auckland.
It will accommodate people from head office, Upper North Island division and Auckland branch, including the Auckland collections fleet, but will not be used for recycling, waste transfer or disposal.
Sustainability has been a driver of the project, with the buildings and facilities on target to achieve a Green Star rating of 5+, indicating “New Zealand excellence”.
During the build, 75% of unused construction materials and packaging was recycled and the site features innovative sustainability features, such as EV charging facilities for Waste Management’s growing electric fleet and rainwater harvesting.
Architects Jasmax designed the corporate office, with Eclipse Architecture designing the truck workshops, including Waste Management’s electric vehicle innovation hub.
Waste Management Managing Director Tom Nickels says the new Auckland base encapsulates two of the company’s key pillars – safety and sustainability.
“It has been purpose built to meet our requirements around sustainability, health and safety and strong company culture. Our team will start moving in from today and we will be fully based at East Tamaki Road from the New Year.”
Waste Management is committed to sustainability and was the first waste company to measure and publicly report its carbon footprint through Toitū carbonreduce certification. The company has one of the largest electric vehicle fleets in Australasia and is making significant reductions to its carbon footprint as part of its commitment to the Climate Leaders Coalition.
The 5.2ha site, with access from both Springs Road and East Tamaki roads, was formerly a bottling plant and was purchased by Stride Property Limited in 1999. Waste Management has an initial lease term of 25 years.
