We are proud to announce that last week Waste Management won the Skills Highway Award at the Diversity Awards for our Skills First initiative.
The initiative – a workplace literacy and numeracy project – is focused on building communication skills and confidence of our team across Waste Management.
“This is a fantastic award to win, as this is a normally invisible aspect to our business. Shining a light on just how diverse our workforce is and the skills pathways we are developing to bring that diversity through to all levels, will only add to the reasons why people choose to work for us,” says South Island General Manager Gareth James.
Waste Management’s HR Manager, Sharon Scott explains how the initiative has opened doors for our team members.
“If I’ve not had such a good experience at school, then jumping into a first line management course is not really an option, but something like this is a lovely segue into a learning pathway,” says Sharon.
“We’re about the whole person – Skills First ties in with our wellbeing programme, which is linked to health and safety and self-confidence – the physical, emotional and mental health of our employees.”
The Skills highway Award celebrates workplaces that can show how they have helped improve their team members’ reading, writing, maths and communication skills, and consequently improved business outcomes.
