Waste Management is proud to release our third annual Sustainability Report, meeting the standard of GRI (Global Reporting Initiative). It presents our sustainability progress during 2021 across five key areas – Our Environment, Our Communities, Our Customers, Our People and Our Business.

The report shows significant improvements in reducing the carbon intensity of our business, with an 18.3% reduction in our operational intensity carbon footprint since 2017, and a 7% drop in the last 12 months. This big reduction is driven by continued electrification of our transport fleet, with the company now having 26 electric trucks on the road carrying waste, saving over 270 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2021.

Managing Director Evan Maehl says climate change is the biggest challenge facing our planet and Waste Management recognises the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

“This year’s results shows that our efforts to reduce emissions from the way we do business are working. The action we’ve taken around our our landfill gas capture, electrification of our fleet and recycling a greater amount onshore to avoid emissions from international shipping are making a difference. This work will only accelerate in the years to come."

“I invite everyone to read our Sustainability Report, which details our carbon reduction efforts and the progress we are making in our other sustainability goals.”

Other highlights in 2021 include Our Business’ new company Circular Strategy and Values and the Kotahitanga – Together diversity and inclusion activity for Our People. We’ve had positive impacts on Our Customers and Our Community by making resource recovery easier with new facilities in Hamilton and west Auckland, and our Hutt City Council kerbside waste and recycling contract rollout included a 50% electric fleet, to be fully electric within 5 years.
