Waste Management named Fleet Champion of the Year

We’re delighted to announce that last night Waste Management won the Fleet Champion of the Year Award at the inaugural EV World NZ EV Champions Awards.

The awards recognise and celebrate those individuals, businesses and communities that are championing success, service and progress.

As one of New Zealand’s largest heavy vehicle operators with a fleet of around 800 trucks and 200 light vehicles, Waste Management has monitored the rapidly evolving global move to electric vehicles over the last five years.

This led to our announcement regarding our move to electric vehicles in our Sustainability Commitment last year. We are now proud to have two fully electric trucks on New Zealand streets – including the first 100% electric sideloader collection truck in the southern hemisphere – as well as our fleet of around 30 light vehicles.

Our move to electric vehicles is also unique as an example of the circular economy in action: waste taken to our modern, sustainable landfill and energy parks is used to generate electricity, which is then fed into the National Grid.

This is possible because Waste Management’s modern, sustainable landfills hold all waste in a sealed environment. This means we capture the naturally emitted gas from the waste as it digests anaerobically, which is then fed into generators to generate electricity.

We are very proud to have won the Fleet Champion of the Year Award and are excited as we continue to move electric and we want to thank our team who have led this program, as well as our truck conversion partner EMOSS, in the Netherlands.
